Exploring Gunung Rajah Summit Day Trip

February, 23 2013

Conquer Gunung Rajah in a single day was one of my aim in 2013.  The first attempt was not able to make it on January 2013 so we would like to a second try again a month after. This was my first time joining KL Hiking Group, they set the cut off time of 7 hours max to reach the summit or else we got to U turn back wherever we were (event just 5 minutes more to reach the top).

The distance and time frame limit was really trained my mental strength on ascent to ensure that I could reach the peak within 6 hours 25 minutes (late started15 minutes + wrong trail wasted 20 minutes), descent time was really trained my physical fitness to ensure that I could walk back to the trail head.

Yes! I did it. I must admit that this hike tested my limit to the max with 13 hours hiked and rest at the summit for 30 minutes.

Second attempt for Gunung Rajah Day Trip

October, 25 2014

On the first half of the journey ascent to the peak was really enjoyed.  Started our journey a bit late, reached to the peak about 1:50 p.m. On the way back rain started while we almost reached Lata Hijau campsite. By the time we reached Y river about 5:40 p.m. the water has been raised up more than 8 feet. Trying a few attempts but failed, stuck in the river crossing for 12 hours and experienced the longest night ever in my life with cool weather, heavy rain, water raised up again at mid night, rush up to upper part. Luckily all of us with extra food, water and emergency blanket. Managed to came out next day morning.

    1. Rajah starting point to Lata Naning would be 2 times of never end road to Camp lolo (Distance comparison)
Rajah Lata Naning to False Peak would be 2 times of Camp lolo to Camp Pacat (Distance & Elevation comparison)
Rajah False Peak to Summit would be 2 times of Camp Pacat to False Peak (Distance)

    1. Hi Chen,

It is not necessary to engage a guide but I would suggest you go will someone who knows the trail direction. He/she could also advise the cut off time and monitor the team performance.

    3. Hi Chen,

Possible download the GPS log on your smart phone in order for you to refer the current location for time to time if none of you been there before....Do a U turn whenever heavy rain and cross the Sungai Y as soon as possible.

Bring you own rope as backup.

      Enjoy your trip!

  8. Hi McHiker, I just realized that I was in the KL Hiking group that you joined! That was my first attempt at Rajah which I gave up after suffering cramps after Lata Nanning... It was not until 3 Aug 2014 that I returned for a successful 14hr attempt (even though we got off-track/lost in the dark for 2hrs! And I got stung by a big hornet!).. It sure is tough!

I plan to solo hike at Gunung Rajah. May I know do there have signs that clearly indicating on the way to the summit from the base mountain?
I want to make sure i'm on the right track and didn't get lost :)

  15. Try Sarawak Batu Baram, exciting and challenging, can meet Kenyah, Kayam, Penan tribe on way up, nearest town Miri, about 4 to 5 hours to reach summit from 4WD vehicle park at base, prior to that stay at Batu 10 Timber camp about a few hours on Timber track

I plan to have 2D1N hike.

    Need your guidance on

    1. Hi,

      1. You may require to apply for the permit for G. Rajah
      2. Both campsite with water source...duration between two campsite about 1 ~ 1.5 hours. Lata Hijau would be better place for camping.

    1. Hi,
To be honest, personally I would not recommend you join for a long day hike for your first hiking experience.

You may feel joyful if it is a 2D1N / 3D2N camping trip.

    3. Hi Shafsung,
No worries, do more training / running to keep yourself fit. Don't think of when going to reach the peak...just hike and take a short rest. You will able to reach the peak.
