Exploring Irau Yellow Pas

October, 12 2013

TRANS IRAU-YELLOW-PASS is 2110m-1667m-1587m respectively above sea level, the trail is a continuous up and down trekking with total distance about 12 KM.

The track follows the borderline between Pahang and Perak and the presence of boarder stones makes it easier to follow the trail. Best part is, it will be a one-way direction only, so we do not have to walk back the same way to get out.

I decided to do this trail again once I know half of the Mt. Yellow has gone and become vege farm.
The first stage of the hike from Mossy Forest to Mt. Irau has taken most of our time on photo shotting and enjoying the view.  Taken our lunch after between Mt. Irau and 30 minutes below Mt. Yellow, that place would be the best view of the whole journey.

  3. How far to pick up from temple to pass? Is the stream clean for shower on the pass side after descending? Which is the toughest of the hike? What shoe would be ideal for this kind of long hike?

    1. Hi Adrian,

      1. By looking at the trail map posted, you can notice that the Chinese temple is located in Kg. Raja (Red color road with marking of "59").
      2. Normally we do shower at the Chinese temple.
      3. The elevation gain/loss with multiple ups and downs, long journey distance with time constraints. Night hike is not advisable unless your group members know the trail well.
      4. Wear shoes with profile.

P/S: It is a one way ticket trail, the group members physical fitness is indeed a prerequisite.

      Do enjoy your trip!

  4. Thanks for your shared experience.Indeed it did help to prepare mentally and time taken consideration for reaching each peak. I've managed in 11hrs starting at 8am and ended at 7pm which was still bright. Total 75 hikers took part and due to the large group, delay and hike prolong expected. A quarter of them were already out at 6.10pm. The last group came out at 11:30pm.

    1. Hi Dickson,
I would advise you arrange the 4x4 service to pick you up. I use to contact Kumar 019-4053660 which provide the 4x4 service around Cameron Highlands.

    1. Hi Kate,
Slow walk and enjoying the scene to Mount Irau might only takes 2 1/2 ~ 3 hours (one way). The trail is clear enough and no guide is needed.

      Enjoy your trip!

  10. Hi mcHiker!

I'm planning to hike this trail with my partner (2 person in total) and would like to follow your footsteps. I'm a bit concerned about being lost anyway. Is the route pretty easy for intermediate hikers?

Please do email me if we need to get in contact:
    mike@bookup.my

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Mike,

The entire trail just follow the border stone from below No.60 till No. 533 (Gunung Pass), you could install with GPS tracking Apps and upload the GPS trail before start. Ensure you off the data plan and just on the GPS signal (to save your phone battery and get better GPS possible accuracy).

Monitor your timing to avoid hike in the dark. Start early if possible.

      Enjoy your trip!

  12. Hi mcHiker,

I'm a local been to Cameron Highlands a few times but never been to Mossy Forest and Mount Irau before.

As the information from TripAdvisor seems a bit confused to me as there are so many different trails there, thus I wonder do I have to start my trail from the temple if I'm just going to the Mossy Forest? Seems like following your trail can enjoy the beauty of Mossy Forest as well as I afraid my female companion is not so tough to reach the peak so at least we still can go through the beautiful mossy forest, is the view of the summit is worthy for this such a long hike? And is Mt. Pass & Mt. Yellow a must pass-thru routes to Mt. Irau?

Moreover, I don't understand about the arrangement of the 4x4, is the 4x4 should pick up us from hotel and drop us at the temple? Or we could just park our car at the temple and drive there by ourself?

    Thanks so much! :)

    1. Hi Ervin,

If you are planning to go Mount Irau only, you could start from Mossy Forest. Usually takes 2 1/2 ~ 3 hours one way. You would pass by Mini Irau before reaching to Mt. Irau summit. You could either drive and park you car at Mossy Forest or arrange the 4x4 pickup from temple.

Continue from Mt. Irau would lead you to Mt. Yellow and Mt. Pas which require another 6~8 hours.
