Exploring Air Craft Crashed Area of RAF B-24 Liberator (KL654R)

October, 27 2013

Hiking Gunung Telapak Buruk is not our aim on this trip, the trail head actually start from the peak of Gunung Telapak Buruk. There are few telecommunication towers (Digi, Maxis, Celcom) and two Telekom towers with guarded by soldiers.

The starting point is on your left if you are facing the Digi, Maxis, Celcom towers, that area is under Hutan Simpanan Kekal Berembun. The trail starts downwards about 20 minutes follow by few up and down slope. Although this is not a famous hiking area but the trail is quite clear with lots of ribbon makers, there are few fallen trees along the way.

After an hour and 10 minutes we reached to an open area, there were few pieces of crashed aircraft's wing on the left hand side of the open area. We met another hiking group just visited the crashed aircraft area coming up from the right hand side of the open area.  the trail on the right leads to the main crashed aircraft area.

If you continue from the open area would leads to Gunung Berembun peak, further down would lead you to Loji Rawatan Air Pantai where you could do a Trans Gunung Berembun.

Through and flow would takes almost the same time especially the last 20 minutes before reaching back the Gunung Telapak Buruk summit.

  2. Do we need to apply a permit to drive into the Hutan Simpan area as well as to trek to the crash area since you said there are soldiers at the peak?

    1. No permit require. The soldiers are taking care of the TM communication tower only.

    2. the site is where the ULU Sungai Muar starts.. this place also carried our first IGP - Tuan Pennar.
Went there way back in 1982...and on the biggest part of the plane has a name " SNAKE "
Went there on a RKK jungle patrol - vat69
I hopelah..every trekker will respect the jungles and the wreckagge.
Leave anything you see and carry out anything tht you carried in too.

  3. Hi mcHiker, I am planning to do a 2 night, 3 day trans berembun walk with a small group of students (7). I am looking for suitable campsites, ideally with water. I take it from your map that it is possible to camp near the Liberator wreck, but do you know another suitable one. we can do the trek in either direction...
    Thanks in advance

    1. Hi,

There are 4 suitable campsites along the trail
      - Liberator Wreck Campsite (Not too sure able the water source)
      - Gunung Berumbun Summit Campsite (No water)
      - Gua Kambing (With WaterSource)
      - Waterfall Campsite

      WaterSource
      - 2 streams from Loji Air Pantai to Waterfall
      - Waterfall Campsite
      - 4 streams from Waterfall to Gua Kambing
      - Gua Kambing (Last water point if not mistaken)

    2. Hi mcHiker,

Much obliged to you for your prompt and detailed reply. One final question if possible; which two campsites would you chose if you were with 7 - 10 students (Late teens), and you were carrying everything in your packs for three days, and were either starting at the bottom of the Gunung Telapak Buruk access road and ending at the Shorea resort, or vice versa. I am inclined to stay the first night at the field 1/3 the way up the access road, then at the liberator campsite on the second night... then push all the way to shore resort on the third day. Would you advise this plan ?

      Many thanks again, Phil

    3. Hi Phil,

If the Trans point to point is from Access Point of Telapak Buruk to Shore Resort, I would prefer your plan:

Day 1 : Camp someway at the field of the access road (There are places with water source near 1/2 or 3/4 of the road)

Day 2 : Carry water and camp in Liberator Wreck campsite (Mainly descent from End of access onwards)

Day 3 : Pass thru Gunung Berembun, Gua Kambing, Waterfall to Shore resort

      Enjoy your trip!
